Your Breathing Brain

What is happening to your brain while you breathe?

Dr. Andrew Huberman of Stanford University recently shared this MRI of the brain while nasal breathing. Alongside the visual, he shared these medical insights from rigorous scientific studies:

  • Exhales slow heart rate

  • Inhales increase heart rate

  • A single 10 min breathing session can rewire vagal tone

  • Physiological sighs (double nasal maximum inhale, followed by full mouth exhale) are the fastest way to calm

  • Cyclic hyperventilation (deliberate) can raise stress threshold and potently reduce inflammation via adrenaline

  • Nasal breathing is best most all of the time for health, performance and aesthetics of the face. (Of course there are times when mouth breathing is better- in certain sports etc.)
