Reverse Engineer Your Resolutions

The beginning of the year is a perfect time to set goals for yourself and for your direct reports.

Do you have 1-on-1s on the calendar? Are you in the process of defining your personal goals for your own career growth?

Taking a step back and reverse engineering your 2023 resolutions is a great way to identify where you want to go and how you’re going to get there.

Try the prompts from the resolution exercise below to help guide your thought process. The example used is based on a data point from a Manilla Recruitment 2022 survey stating, “50% of 7,000 employees left their job to get away from their manager.”

Your Intention = Your Desired Outcome

Prompt #1: What is your intention for your year?

Example: As a manager, my intention is to hit my organizational team benchmarks in 2023.

Your Goals = Your Concrete, Definable Accomplishments

Prompt #2: What are your goals towards this intention?

Example: My goal is to retain 100% of my top-talent and develop a highly-motivated team.

Your Resolutions = Your Disciplined Action Items To Achieve a Goal

Prompt #3: What are your resolutions?

Example: My resolutions are to provide my team with tools that support their well-being, to be their advocate whenever possible, and give praise and recognize the great work that they do.

Reverse engineer your resolutions based on the desired outcome you’re looking to accomplish. Here’s to a year of growth, joy, and great leadership!
