How to Mitigate Burnout

Who is being impacted?

Feeling burnt out? You are not alone. According to a recent report by McKinsey & Company, nearly half of all employees in Asia, Australia, Latin America, Europe, and the US are feeling burnt out. McKinsey states that this high percentage is still underrepresented, as the report doesn’t account for people who’ve already left their jobs, a side effect of burnout. According to The Washington Post turnover is happening in record-breaking rates.

How burnout snuck up on me.

From the outside looking in, all can be perceived as fine and dandy. Business is good and I’m fired up about our new service launches and initiatives for 2022. I have great partners and advisors and we have a fantastic team of talent, contributing to the sustainability of our growth. I exercise and meditate daily, have a healthy social life and am blessed with a beautiful, supportive family.

All that aside, by the end of December 2021, I was feeling stretched in all directions and 100% exhausted. As a female entrepreneur, living an untraditional lifestyle as a digital nomad, juggling a plethora of transitions within my personal life and work, I ended 2021 feeling emotionally, physically, and mentally exhausted. Prioritizing my wellness practices has always been my way of being, so these sensations of feeling burnt out completely snuck up on me.

Resolving burnout.

Drawing awareness towards the feelings of exhaustion, provided a growth opportunity for me as a leader in my company, ultimately strengthening communication skills with my partners. Being able to recognize, share and then act accordingly has been vital in my re-alignment. In hindsight, this exercise around vulnerability and communication might prove to be a beneficial moment for the sustainable growth of my work.

As part of the solution, understanding that as committed to my defined wellness routines as I am, during heightened levels of stress, my mind and body may require more breaks, more play time, and more rest than during other times of the year. Taking this to heart, I’m prioritizing more wellness breaks for myself within my workday, including extra moments with my two nephews (one of which just joined us on 1/3/2022) and niece.
